Citizen Science: Dr. Robert Rubin & Manta Research

Dive with a Purpose! Study Manta Rays with Dr. Robert Rubin on the Quino El Guardian Liveaboard!

February 23 - March 4, 2017
March 5 - 14, 2017

Join the amazing crew of the Quino El Guardian and Dr. Robert Rubin on one of the most inspiring dive adventures of your lifetime! You will experience working side by side with Dr. Rubin and participate with him and other divers in his manta research.

The primary work will be placing tags on mantas, getting photo identification images and sex/size ratios and collecting and replacing receivers. Dr. Rubin also involves divers on cleaning station observations and plankton ID and manta feeding at the lava field if the water is calm. Tissue sampling is also possible to obtain DNA for later lab use and to establish kinship relationships.

Dr. Rubin has extensive data that has been collected over years of research which he will share at daily presentations to the divers. Presentations will be limited to a maximum of one hour each and subjects include:

Dr. Rubin's inspiring TEDx Talk about mantas

The evolution of sharks and rays and mantas as the most derived (specialized and recent) stage

A summary of his past photo ID work and the use of it to show the movements around the islands and between the islands and the Sea of Cortez. This data is very important from a conservation standpoint and is being used in the nomination to UNESCO for World Heritage Site establishment. This will also help divers understand how to take photos and contribute to the future research.

Manta feeding

Manta sex and reproduction. This also explains to divers how to tell the sex and in the case of males the approximate age of mantas.

Manta conservation and the issue of the killing of animals for their dried gills for sale in the orient for kidney medicine. This is a valuable story for everyone regardless of their specific interest in manta.

Cleaning symbiosis and interactions with other fish like jacks and remoras. Divers will be able to easily experience underwater.

In addition, divers’ will find DNA sampling of great interest as well as shark talks. Night observations are always a big hit as well!
